The Black Berry Storm is available now from Verizon Wireless, and was recently cut to with a two-year contract.
Thankfully Vodafone Germany has stepped up to the plate and has officially released a software update for the 9500.
Reported to improve accelerometer lag and touchscreen accuracy among other things, OS 184.108.40.206 is sure to make many disgruntled European Storm users happy.
Enhancements in Black Berry OS 5.0 include tabbed web browsing, flagged emails, and a greatly improved Maps application.
With this upgrade, the original Storm runs the same operating system version as the Black Berry Storm2, which will be released on Wednesday.
We downloaded the update over the air yesterday and it took about 2 hours for the 19MB update – the servers were probably running at full capacity. It no longer takes 5-7 seconds for the phone dialing app to load. However, the auto-rotation of the screen still isn’t as quick as we would like it but it’s better than before.
Once it finished downloading and installing, we were instantly pleased. We still wish there was a way to disable this entirely though. Now, the picture is displayed almost instantly when the shutter button is pressed verses the 5 second lag on the old firmware. One of the biggest and most welcomed changes however is the new text selection mode.
Get it Now Users of this Blackberry can update their smartphones to the new OS 5.0 software directly off RIM’s website, through the Black Berry Desktop Manager, or from Verizon Wireless’ download site.
There is no charge for this system software upgrade.
It took a steady fingernail to select the desired text. It took the Storm from one of the worst phones ever made, to a quality Black Berry.
We just wish it hadn’t taken Verizon seven months to update the phone.
